Actress Scarlett Johansson is ending her relationship with Oxfam after being criticised over her support for an Israeli company operating in the West Bank.

She has “a fundamental difference of opinion” with Oxfam International, said her spokesman, because the humanitarian group opposes all trade from Israeli settlements — saying they are illegal and deny Palestinian rights.

“Scarlett has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years,” said a statement.

“They have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. She is very proud of her accomplishments and fund-raising efforts during her tenure with Oxfam.”

The Avengers star this month signed on as SodaStream International’s first global brand ambassador. She appears in an advert for it during the Super Bowl this Sunday. The soft drinks firm has come under fire from pro-Palestinian activists for maintaining a large factory at an Israeli settlement in the West Bank, a territory captured by Israel in 1967 and claimed by the Palestinians.

Johansson, 29, said in response that she supported “economic co-operation and social interaction between Israel and Palestine”. That led to Oxfam saying it was “considering the implications of her statement and what it means for her Oxfam global ambassador role”.
