A centuries-old mummy found in the Swiss city of Basel has been revealed to be an ancestor of Boris Johnson.

Scientists said the remains, which were discovered in 1975 during renovation work at a church, belong to artistocrat Anna Catharina Bischoff.

She is the great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother of the Foreign Secretary.

Boris Johnson has yet to comment on the discovery but once told the BBC programme Who Do You Think You Are? that his family they were “posh toffs”.

There was no gravestone to indicate her identity, but initial testing of her wooden coffin suggested it dated from the 16th Century.
