A search has been launched for a British yachtsman who fell overboard in the Southern Ocean during a gruelling round-the-world race.

John Fisher, 47, was reported missing at sea after the accident 1,400 nautical miles west of Cape Horn on the southern tip of South America.

Officials said he was wearing survival equipment when he went overboard from the Team Sun Hung Kai/Scallywag yacht in gale-force winds, during the seventh leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.

Team-mates have been searching for Mr Fisher in a 35-knot westerly wind but organisers said the conditions made it impossible to turn other competitors around to help.

However, a ship was identified 400 nautical miles away that has been diverted to the scene to aid rescue efforts.

Weather conditions were forecast to deteriorate throughout Monday.

In a statement, organisers said: "Naturally we are deeply concerned, especially given the weather conditions, and Race Control in Alicante is supporting the Scallywag team and MRCC throughout the operation."

The Volvo Ocean Race is a 45,000-nautical mile race around the world. The teams are currently on leg seven, a 7,600-mile race from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajai, Brazil.
