A second earthquake has struck New Zealand's South Island hours after an initial quake killed two people.

The new tremor, measuring 6.3 in magnitude, hit at 1.35pm local time today (12.45am GMT), in Cheviot, northeast of Christchurch.

A 7.8 magnitude quake struck in the same area, around 60 miles from Christchurch, just after midnight in New Zealand on Monday, causing a six-foot high tsunami.

It was felt in the capital Wellington, more than 120 miles away.

The earthquakes have been followed by close to 400 aftershocks, including one that struck at 5.8 magnitude at 7.45pm local time today.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key has confirmed the deaths, while the department of civil defence has warned people all along the country's east coast to move to higher ground after tall waves battered the area.

New Zealand sits on the "Ring of Fire," an arc of seismic faults around the Pacific Ocean where earthquakes are common. An earthquake in 2011 in Christchurch killed 185 people.
