Sex And The City star Cynthia Nixon promised to “keep fighting” after she failed in her bid to become the governor of New York state.

The former actress turned activist, who played Miranda Hobbes in the hit TV show, was defeated in the Democratic party primary race by current governor Andrew Cuomo, who won the nomination for a third term.

He has been the state’s governor since 2011 and will face a general election in the state on November 6.

Nixon, 52, had hoped to become the latest “insurgent liberal” to beat an establishment Democrat.

She ran on a platform to the Left of Mr Cuomo with policies including legalising marijuana and curbing deportations of immigrants.

After her defeat she said: “We started something here in New York, and it doesn’t end today.”
