An 11-year-old girl injured in the rally crash in Galicia has died in hospital, bringing the death toll to seven.

Named locally as Uxia, she had been in a critical condition with severe head injuries since the smash on Saturday. She died in intensive care at 10.30pm last night, local media reported.

A pregnant woman who was due to give birth today was also killed in the accident, along with her partner.

An adult and another child are said to be in a serious condition. Five more people remain in hospital while 10 have been treated and discharged.

The crash, during the A Coruña Rally, took place just before 8pm near the town of Carral. The driver, Sergio Tabeayo, lost control of his Peugeot 206 XS on a bend and smashed into a crowd of about 20 spectators.

Six people, including a 13-year-old girl, were killed instantly.

The pregnant woman, Ana Cayazzo, and her partner Miguel Caridad, both in their twenties, had driven from their home in the nearby town of Cambre. Mr Caridad had recently posted photos on Facebook showing him tenderly touching his girlfriend’s stomach. A keen motor racing fan, he is understood to have persuaded her to go.

Another pregnant woman was reportedly among the dead. Four of the victims came from Carral, which has a population of 5,000.

Three of the dead were named as Marcos Prego, Sandra Maria Ares and her 13-year-old daughter Aroa. Another victim from Cambre, Laura Dubra, was watching with her husband Sergio, who is reportedly in a serious condition.

Carral’s mayor, Jose Luis Fernandez Mourino, said Mr Tabeayo was “absolutely devastated”, adding: “What he wants to do is disappear.”

Mr Tabeayo and his co-driver Luis Prego were unhurt but are having counselling. They are expected to be interviewed by investigators this week.

The crash, in the north-western region of Spain, is the worst in the country’s history. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy tweeted: “My heartfelt condolences for those killed. I wish the injured a full and speedy recovery.”
