The former boss of McDonald’s has resigned from the board of the US supermarket chain that owns Asda just a day after he was fired from the burger giant over an office affair.

Walmart, the world’s biggest retailer, said last night that Steve Easterbrook, 52, had stepped down with immediate effect.

The firm’s statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission said the move “was not due to any disagreement with the company”.

Mr Easterbrook, pictured, was appointed as a non-executive director of Walmart in 2018 and was paid $233,736 by the company in the last financial year.

The Walton family, which controls Walmart, are known for their conservative stance.

Mr Easterbrook, who had worked for McDonald’s for 25 years, admitted he had shown “poor judgment” in starting a relationship with a junior colleague — forbidden by the fast food chain’s policy.
