Portugal has been ravaged by brutal winds, leaving 300,000 homes without power on Sunday.

Storm Leslie hit the country’s Atlantic Coast with winds of up to 110mph, as well as heavy rain and surging seas.

No deaths have been reported, though it was said 27 people sustained minor injuries after Leslie – which was initially forecast as a hurricane – made landfall.

At least 1,000 trees were uprooted, mainly in coastal towns north of Lisbon, where the storm first reached land.

The A1, the main motorway running through Portugal, was temporarily blocked by a fallen tree, authorities said.

The storm was most intense during the night but had subsided on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in Spain, winds of about 60mph also uprooted trees in the centre of the country early on Sunday.

Emergency services issued flood warnings for the north and northwest for Sunday afternoon and evening, advising Spaniards to avoid driving in the storm.

Earlier this week, 12 people were killed in flash floods on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca.
