A hapless bank robber took a rather unusual course of action when he was caught at the scene of the crime by police.

The supsected robber, who reportedly had claimed to have a bomb, was surrounded by armed officers outside a Chase branch in downtown Los Angeles on Monday morning.

After realising he had been cornered, the suspected bank robber proceeded to throw the spoils of his crime into the air, showering the pavement with money.

According to ABC News, he had demanded that bank staff hand over the sum of $250,000 (£163,000), and he was captured on camera emptying the cash from a suitcase by his feet.

The footage then shows the man falling to the ground after one of the officers apparently opens fire once.

Television footage also appears to show several other people, possibly bank employees, leaving the building with their arms raised above their heads as officers remain in position nearby.

LAPD spokesman Drake Madison told US TV station KTLA: "Officers arrived and met with that suspect outside of the location, and less-than-lethal force was used to take him into custody."

A bomb squad was dispatched to the scene to examine the suspect's suitcase, while the suspect was treated at a local hospital and then taken into custody, according to police.
