A gunman is on the run in Switzerland after shooting two police officers.

The attacker, who is believed to be in his 30s, reportedly shot the officers during a house search in the northern Swiss commune of Rehetobel shortly after 9am on Tuesday.

The police officers were rushed to a nearby hospital but the extent of their injuries is currently unknown.

A large-scale manhunt was launched in the area for the man who reportedly made off on foot.
