Syria latest: Dramatic TV images appear to show crater left by US-led airstrikes

Syrian state TV appears to have shown the aftermath of a series of airstrikes against Syria as people were filmed walking around a large hole in the ground.

The footage shows people standing next to a large crater, believed to be in the suburb of Homs, said to have been caused by the military action carried out by the US, UK and France overnight.

In the clip, debris and metal fragments can also be seen strewn across the ground.

The strikes began at 2am BST and destroyed important infrastructure at three sites connected to the Syrian regime's chemical weapons programme, according to the allies.

A chemical weapons storage facility west of Homs was struck during the action.

The action comes in retaliation to the purported chemical attack that the Government said was “clearly” carried out by Bashar Assad’s regime.

Theresa May today said the strikes were “limited and targeted”. She added that they were “successful”.

Russian president Vladimir Putin condemned the “destructive” air strikes and threatened “consequences” for the allies.

Syria claimed three civilians were injured.

Assad said the military action came after the West realised it had "lost control and credibility in conflict", according to reports.

The leader has also vowed to "fight and crush terrorism in every inch" of the country, Reuters reported.
