Brainstorm or Green Needle audio mystery is the new Yanny or Laurel: Latest audio clip sweeps web

A new audio clip is set to take the internet by storm following the frenzy of the “yanny” and “laurel” debate.

The clip shows a toy of the character Brainstorm from children’s television show Ben 10, which when pressed utters a sound that is proving equally divisive.

It leaves some people convinced they have heard the word “brainstorm”, however others are adamant that it says “green needle”.

The discrepancy can explained in different way from yanny and laurel.

That has been widely put down to frequency, with people predisposed to hearing higher sounds making out yanny and those better at sensing low frequencies hearing laurel.

One Reddit user suggested, this time around, it has to do a psychological effect known as priming.

That means what you are hear depends on the word you are looking at or thinking of at the time you hear the sound.

The user wrote: “I think it's related to the psychological concept of priming.

“Eg if you tell someone (or yourself) something then present visual or auditory tests, the results are skewed based on what information you were primed with.”

Another added: “Finally! I can hear it both ways, and both at once.

“After only seeing that stupid dress as white and gold, and never being able to switch it to black and blue, I thought I was a dumbass. I have been redeemed!”

One person: "I can't even trust my own mind after watching this", while another added: "This is far more interesting than laurel vs yanny."
