Typhoon batters Hong Kong, injuring more than 100 people

More than 100 people have been injured and homes and businesses damaged by a typhoon in Hong Kong.

Flights were grounded and people took cover in shelters in underground stations as Typhoon Vincente battered the territory.

The storm reached category 10 — the highest rating — and brought winds of 90mph, downpours and floods as it headed towards the Chinese mainland. Hong Kong’s government said 118 people were hurt overnight, many hit by flying debris.

This morning the normally crowded central district was empty, with the stock market and major banks closed, and businesses shuttered.

Between midnight and 8am, 60 flights had been cancelled, 60 delayed and 16 diverted, and more disruption is expected amid gale force winds.
