A London university said it was "shocked and sickened" after the Islamic State executioner known as 'Jihadi John' was today identified as a former student.

Mohammed Emwazi has been widely named as the masked terrorist killer who features in harrowing Islamic State execution videos.

The 27-year-old from Queen’s Park is a computer programming graduate who attended the University of Westminster in the late 2000s.

Friends claim he started to become radicalised after a planned safari in Tanzania following his graduation.

A spokeswoman for the university said it works to tackle extremism and would be setting up a "dedicated pastoral team to provide advice and support".

She said: “A Mohammed Emwazi left the University six years ago.

"If these allegations are true, we are shocked and sickened by the news. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“We have students from 150 countries and their safety is of paramount concern.

"With other universities in London, we are working to implement the Government’s Prevent strategy to tackle extremism.

“We are setting up a dedicated pastoral team to provide advice and support.

"In the meantime, we urge any students who are concerned to contact the student support and well-being team.”

Emwazi was named as the British killer in the Washington Post who quoted one of his close friends saying: “I have no doubt that Mohammed is Jihadi John. He was like a brother to me… I am sure it is him.”
