Thousands of flights have been cancelled in the US as a powerful winter storm wreaks havoc on the north-east.

The storm, known as a “bomb cyclone”, has so far been blamed for up to 17 deaths after blanketing areas in snow and triggering coastal floods.

Forecasters have warned that parts of the country may record their lowest-ever temperatures on Friday and Saturday, while Boston is set for 45cm of snowfall.

Weather warnings have been issued from Georgia up to Canada, with around 60 million people living in the path of the storm.

The cold blitz has also left the Niagara Falls spectacularly frozen over, while three sharks were washed up frozen on beaches in Massachusetts.

New York’s JFK and La Guardia airports both suspended flights on Thursday and are expected to start running them again later in the evening.

The National Weather Service said: "Heavy snowfall rates will spread northward across NH and through southern/central ME through early this evening.

"In addition to heavy snowfall rates, the intensifying storm will result in strengthening winds, producing blizzard conditions for coastal regions of New England."

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency on Thursday.

He said: "It's almost impossible to clear roads when you have those high wind gusts, because as soon as you clear the road the snow, the wind literally just brings the snow back on to the road."

After the snowfall ends, temperatures are forecast to plunge again due to an influx of frigid air from the North Pole.
