An American entrepreneur and billionaire has apologised for saying date rape is "nothing more than belated regret" from women.

Paypal co-founder and Facebook board member Peter Thiel said date rape made the comments in a book co-authored with Zenefits CEO and former PayPal COO David Sacks and first published in 1995.

Titled 'The Diversity Myth: Multiculturalism And Political Intolerance On Campus', it includes several arguments against taking date rape seriously.

Excerpts of the 320-page book resurfaced on Friday following a newspaper report.

Both the authors have apologised for their comments.

Thiel said in a statement: "More than two decades ago, I co-wrote a book with several insensitive, crudely argued statements.

"As I've said before, I wish I'd never written those things. I'm sorry for it. Rape in all forms is a crime. I regret writing passages that have been taken to suggest otherwise."
