Melania Trump is in hospital for a kidney condition and will remain there for the rest of the week, the White House has said.

The US first lady has undergone a procedure "to treat a benign kidney condition".

The procedure was successful and there were no complications, according to a statement.

Mrs Trump, 48, is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre just outside Washington.

A White House statement said: "This morning, First Lady Melania Trump underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition.

"The procedure was successful and there were no complications.

"Mrs Trump is at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and will likely remain there for the duration of the week.

"The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere."

President Donald Trump was expected to visit Mrs Trump at the hospital later on Monday.

She was last seen in public on Wednesday at a White House event to honour military mothers and wives for Mother's Day.
