Students in Texas are planning to bring sex toys into class in protest over a law allowing people to carry guns on university campuses.

Almost 7,000 people have signed up on Facebook to join the protest, which is due to take place next August when a law allowing people to carry concealed weapons on university campuses comes into force.

Jessica Jin, a University of Texas alumnus who organised the rally, wrote on Facebook: “The State of Texas has decided that it is not at all obnoxious to allow deadly concealed weapons in classrooms, however it DOES have strict rules about free sexual expression, to protect your innocence.

“You would receive a citation for taking a DILDO to class before you would get in trouble for taking a gun to class.”

But gun rights supporters criticised the planned protest, arguing that rampaging gunmen target areas without firearms because they are likely to meet least resistance there.

One person wrote on the organisers’ Facebook page: “As a parent I feel more comfortable with my children having a weapon on campus rather than a dildo.”

The ‘campus carry’ law allowing people to take weapons into universities was enacted by Texas Governor Greg Abbott in June and will come into force from August 1 next year.

Dildos are deemed obscene under Texas state laws and are banned from classrooms at the University of Texas.

Ahead of the protest, Ms Jin told the Houston Chronicle: “It should look ridiculous. That’s the point.

“If guns and bloodshed don’t wake people up, a public celebration of sexuality may just do the trick.

“We’re going to need a lot of dildos.”
