A Canadian woman was arrested at Bogota airport after being caught with a fake pregnancy bump stuffed with cocaine, police said.
The suspect had been attempting to board a flight to Toronto when she caught the attention of a policewoman who is thought to have asked her how far along she was.
The woman reacted aggressively, at which point officials went on to search her, and discovered the “belly” was latex.
“[The Canadian] didn’t like the question, which made the official suspicious. Instinctively, she then very delicately touched the lady’s belly, realising it was too hard and extremely cold,” said the deputy director of Colombia’s police anti-narcotics section, Colonel Esteban Arias Melo.
Police found two sealed bags stashed inside the bump, which contained 5lb of cocaine, which would have had a street value of £38,000.
The Canadian, who was arrested last month, will be charged with drug trafficking, possession and production and could be sentenced to between five and eight years in prison.
This year, nearly 150 people were caught with drugs at Bogota’s airport, about a third of which were foreign nationals.
