Nora Quoirin: Rescuers play recording of missing girl's mum saying 'Nora darling, I love you' as they search Malaysian jungle

Charlotte Carter8 August 2019

The voice of Nora Quoirin's mother is being played out on loudspeaker across the Malaysian jungle in a bid to help find the missing teenager.

The 15-year-old, who has learning and developmental difficulties, vanished on Sunday from the Dusun forest eco-resort in the Southern Sembilan state and her family fear she has been abducted.

Malaysian officers investigating initially said there were no signs of foul play, but deputy police chief Che Zakaria Othman said on Wednesday that a police forensic team were analysing fingerprints found in the resort.

The prints were at an open window in a downstairs hall and not in the bedroom upstairs where the girl was sleeping with her siblings, he said.

Police added they were "not ruling out any possibility" and they believe the schoolgirl is still in the area.

As the search enters its fifth day, officials recorded a message from her mother Meabh saying: "Nora darling, I love you, I'm here," to play.

Negri Sembilan Police Chief Datuk Mohamad Mat Yusof said rescuers will use the recordings in a bid to coax the girl back towards her parents.

He said they will be given a loudspeaker to play the message and will also use their phones to play the audio.

He said: “We’ve equipped each team with a hailer and they started using it this morning with the mum’s voice."

Police added that the full recording said: "Nora darling, I love you... mum is here. Mum is here, Nora darling, my love."

Nora's aunt issued an emotional television appeal saying: "we must remain hopeful".

The BBC reported that Nora's parents were due to be interviewed "to find out what voice the victim would like to hear".

About 250 searchers have now joined the round the clock search to find Nora.

"We hope that on this fifth day we will be successful in finding the missing victim," the police chief said.

Nora's distraught uncle told the Standard on Wednesday relatives are losing hope about her safe return.

Francois Vauquois said: “Both abduction and ‘vanishing’ hypothesis are considered but Nora’s parents are convinced she couldn’t have left on her own. I have to say we are very pessimistic now.”

Missing persons charity The Lucie Blackman Trust, who are supporting the family, released a video in which the girl's aunt Eadaoin Agnew said the family was devastated but still hopeful.

"This is extremely traumatic for the whole family. Meabh and Sebastien (Nora's parents) are devastated and too upset to speak themselves at this time," she said.

"But we must remain hopeful. And we ask everyone to keep Nora in their thoughts and to continue to support the ongoing search for her. Nora is still missing, and she is very vulnerable, and we need to do everything we can to bring her home," she added.
