Football star Wayne Rooney and his family joined Donald Trump and his wife Melania for festive celebrations at the White House Christmas party.

Rooney and his wife Coleen were reportedly invited to the party by the president as his guests of honour.

They were joined by their four sons Kai, nine, Klay, five, Kit, two and nine-month-old Cass.

Pictures emerged on social media of Rooney posing with Mr Trump's 12-year-old son Barron at the party, which was also attended by Ivanka and Vanessa Trump and their children.

Sources told The Sun that the Rooney family were given a tour of Trump's private quarters.

The football star and his family moved to Washington, where he now plays for DC United, earlier this year.

Barron is understood to be a DC United fan and has previously played for the club's youth team.

Ivanka posted pictures of her children Arabella, seven, and Theodore, two, admiring the Christmas decorations at the White House .

She wrote: "Holiday cheer at the White House."
