A West Ham fan has been left with life-threatening injuries after he was hit by a road sweeper in Cologne, according to reports.

The 68-year-old was in the German city ahead of his club’s Europa Cup match on Thursday night.

He was reportedly run over at a pedestrian traffic light near Cologne Cathedral at around 9.20pm on Wednesday.

He was to be taken to hospital with serious wounds, where he remained throughout the next day.

The man had fallen under the sweeper’s brushes before the driver crashed into the traffic light pole and injured himself, according to reports quoted by the MailOnline.

The local police force said: “According to witnesses, the 68-year-old crossed Trankgasse at the pedestrian traffic light at around 9:20pm, presumably on red.

“The cleaning vehicle coming from the direction of Comedy Street hit him.

“Immediately after the collision, the driver aged 29 suddenly steered his sweeper into a traffic light pole. He also suffered minor injuries.

“The police deployed a traffic accident investigation team to secure evidence and cordoned off a large area of the accident site.”
