Bonnie Tyler is set to perform her classic hit ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ in complete darkness during next week’s solar eclipse.

The 80s pop star will belt out the song to passengers on board a cruise ship during the exact moment of the rare astronomical event.

All of North America will witness the passing of the sun behind the moon for the first time in 99 years on Monday.

“It’s going to be so exciting,” Tyler told TIME. “It doesn’t happen very often, does it?”

She added: "The eclipse of the sun lasts two minutes and 40 minutes, I'm told. Unlike my song. It had to be chopped about because it was so long. I never thought it would be played on the radio, in the beginning."

Royal Caribbean’s Total Eclipse Cruise will be positioned in the path of totality for the eclipse. Millions of American are expected to travel to cities along the path to get the best view of the eclipse.

Welsh singer Tyler will be backed by US pop group DNCE, fronted by Joe Jonas, for the performance.

The 1985 song, a karaoke favourite, often surges in popularity around the time of total eclipses.

People in the UK will be able to see a partial eclipse on August 21, with the moon only covering a part of the sun.
