The White House was placed on lockdown this evening after an armed man was reportedly shot outside.

US Park Police said the shooting took place on West Executive Drive, near the presidential building.

CNN reported the man was shot in the chest by Secret Service officers as he brandished a weapon.

District of Columbia Fire spokesman Doug Buchanan said one patient was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition shortly after 3pm local time.

A police spokesman said the Secret Service is investigating.

President Obama was not in the building at the time having left this afternoon to play golf at Andrews Air Force Base, officials said.

White House reporters were taken into the press briefing room and were not allowed to go outside the West Wing until the lockdown was lifted around one hour later.
