Police investigating the violence at Schemengees Bar and Grill and Sparetime Recreation, in Lewiston, Maine, later named Robert Card as a "person of interest".

Officers said Card should be "considered armed and dangerous" and revealed that the 40-year-old has a history of mental health struggles.

He reportedly spent two weeks in a mental health facility over the summer, after "hearing voices" and threatening to shoot up a military base in Saco.

Card is believed to be a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserve.

He apparently lost his job recently, according to DailyMail.com, but it is not known who his former employer was.

The same report said Card was single, lived in a rural part of Maine and studied engineering at the University of Maine between 2001 and 2004 - although it is not clear whether he graduated.

The police have also shared a photo of a white "vehicle of interest" which was spotted in Lisbon.

No arrests have been made since the deadly shootings, with police still scouring Lewiston and Lisbon for Card.

Maine residents, who have been told to shelter in place while the hunt is ongoing, were urged to report any sightings of Card or the white vehicle.

Different death toll figures have been reported but it is believed to be between 16 and 22 - Lewiston, City Councilor Robert McCarthy told CNN it was as high as 22.

A high school pupil is among those who were wounded, according to Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque, who spoke about “witnesses of all ages” being interviewed by police.

He does not know if any children were killed.

Several roads in the area have been closed, schools have cancelled for the day and municipal buildings in Lisbon and Lewiston are shut.
