The ex-wife of a man who hated Donald Trump said her former husband died “peacefully” after she lied and told him the US president had been impeached.

Teresa Elliot, 68, said she spoke to her ex-husband Michael Garland Elliot moments before his death telling him that Mr Trump had been forced to give up the presidency.

Her 75-year-old former husband died at his home in Oregon in the US on April 6 after they had spoken on the phone.

In an interview with the New York Daily News, she said: “I knew it was his very, very last moments. I knew that would bring him comfort. He then took his final breath.”

She described Mr Elliot, who died from congestive heart failure, as a “news junkie” who “hated Trump’s effing guts”.

In his obituary, published in The Oregonian newspaper, Ms Elliot said the last thing she told her ex-husband was that the president had been impeached.

It reads: “Upon hearing that he took his final, gentle breath, his earthly work concluded. Mike will be forever missed but never forgotten.”

Asked by the New York Daily News if she regretted leaving him with a piece of fake news, she said: “Oh God no. If I could leave him with a happy piece of news then why wouldn’t I? And maybe in the end it won't turn out to be a lie."
