A woman traded in a single packet of McDonald’s limited edition Szechuan sauce for a car as “Rick and Morty” fans scrambled to get hold of the rare product.
People lined up for hours after McDonald’s said it would release the dip for one day only.
The special condiment was originally used in a one-off promotion of Disney movie Mulan in 1998, but it has become the subject of international fascination after it featured in the plot of the hugely popular animated series Rick and Morty.
After waiting hours to snag one of the 20 packets of the rare sauce, Rachel Marie from Michigan, US, traded it off for a car after posting a photo of it on a Facebook group dedicated to trading pins.
“There was actually a large response with some nice pins,” Marie told Business Insider. “But if I could get a car, I thought, why not ask?”
The 23-year-old graphic designer found a Rick and Morty fan so dedicated he was willing to trade the single sachet of sauce for his 2000 Volkswagen Golf Mk4.
“He drove the car over so I know it was running,” she said, without revealing the man’s name. “He was a dedicated fan of the show and already had a second car.”
Business Insider interviewed the man, who did not want to be named. He justified the trade by saying he “just needed me some friggin sauce!!”
Marie had driven 45 minutes to Detroit to get hold of the sauce.
In the season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty, series lead Rick Sanchez declares it his life mission to get the sauce, and fans have craved it ever since.
But most were left disappointed when they queued for hours at McDonald’s to find each branch only had 20 packets. Police were called to Wellington in Florida after fans grew angry and began chanting.
McDonald’s has promised to bring back Szechuan sauce on a larger scale sometime this winter, according to Polygon.com.
