YouTube has been accused of burying its head in the sand after it changed its logo and look this week amid talk of "economic censorship" on the platform.

The new logo was rolled out on Tuesday. It is the first time the site has changed its logo since it launched 12 years ago, but users say the update overlooks more serious problems with the platform.

Explaining its new look and features in an official blog post, Youtube said the new logo is “designed for our multi-screen world” because an abbreviated version will appear on smaller devices.

But users were underwhelmed by the updates. Some pointed out the lack of difference between the old and new logo:

Others took issue with YouTube prioritising its makeover over fixing ongoing problems:

Mortal Gaming commented on the blog: “I have a better idea instead of adding random s*** can you instead fix the website?”

YouTube has been accused of “economic censorship” by making it increasingly difficult to monetise specific kinds of videos on the site.

Topics deemed not “advertiser friendly”, particularly gaming videos involving guns, are not given ads, meaning creators make no money from views.

The policy has demonetised YouTube bloggers who specialise in using footage from games to review them.

YouTube’s blog post concludes: "We know this is a lot of change, but we want to make clear that there’s one thing that stays the same: YouTube’s mission.

“We’re here to give people a voice and show them the world – no matter what device they use.”
