Crowds roar Murray to SW19 victory

Andy Murray celebrates a point against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny

Andy Murray whipped up the Wimbledon crowds as he sailed into the quarter-finals following Laura Robson's emotional departure from the grand slam.

Murray, 26, returned to the spotlight just after the British teenager crashed out of the Championships following a tense and "disappointing" fourth-round clash.

Robson, 19, fought back tears as she left Court One, and later claimed she was unable to wave to her fans for fear she would break down.

Her defeat came shortly before defending champion Serena Williams, 31, made a shock exit in her Centre Court clash with Sabine Lisicki.

But Murray cruised into the final eight on a day dubbed "Magic Monday" on account of its stellar line-up.

The Scot, who gestured to the crowd in a bid to boost the cheers after winning one point, was rewarded with a rowdy ovation as he clinched the match.

Earlier, he appeared delighted when he begged for more support and noise levels rocketed. The encouragement and cheers of "Come on, Andy!" appeared to have the desired effect, and he beat Russia's Mikhail Youzhny in straight sets, 4-6, 6-7, 1-6.

Murray had said how the crowd's backing spurred him on, and he harked back to the lively crowds that cheered him to victory during last summer's Olympics.

"Wimbledon has its own special atmosphere, and it can seem a bit quieter at times," he wrote in his BBC column.

"The tournament has built its history on tradition and good manners, and you have to respect that. The crowd do get right into the matches, they're just extremely respectful. It was a bit more raucous during the Olympics though, and personally I enjoy that."
