Five teenagers have been charged with wounding and possessing a knife after a 19-year-old man was stabbed.

The man was walking along Bristol Street in Birmingham with female friends near the university campus in the early hours of Saturday when he was knifed three times, West Midlands Police said.

Officers were called to the scene at 1am and found the victim collapsed on the pavement.

He was taken to hospital and has undergone emergency surgery after suffering multiple stab wounds, a police spokesman said.

He is said to be in a stable condition, the spokesman added.

The five teenagers, aged between 14 and 16, have been charged with wounding and possessing a knife.

They will appear at Birmingham Youth Court on Monday morning.
