BBC bosses have ordered a a new series of corner shop sitcom Still Open All Hours after being impressed with the Christmas special.

Six episodes of the series, starring Sir David Jason as Granville, will be filmed in Doncaster and shown later this year.

The show, which starred Sir David with late comic Ronnie Barker as stammering Albert Arkwright, originally ran from 1973 to 1985 but was revived for a special episode on Boxing Day.

That one-off pulled in more than nine million viewers on the day with around three million more watching it on catch-up.

Sir David said: "I am so delighted that we are doing a series of Still Open All Hours as the feedback from our Christmas Special has been so rewarding and encouraging. We want to have more fun giving the audience the kind of show they seemed to appreciate. It goes to prove that the corner shop is still open all hours."

The show's w riter Roy Clarke said: "I'm delighted. It's like going back home."
