A slice of cake baked for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding is to be auctioned next week.

Auctioneers Mellors and Kirk are expecting the slice of fruit cake to fetch between £50 and £150 when it goes up for sale on Wednesday April 9.

It is being sold on behalf of Adrian Richardson, a former employee of Crown Speciality Packaging in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

The 59-year-old was one of a small number of employees of the firm who were sent a piece of the royal wedding cake to thank them for their work on a specially commissioned presentation tin.

He received a piece of cake in one of the tins he helped to design, with a personal thank you note from the Prince of Wales.

Crown Speciality Packaging was commissioned to make the presentation tins for the royal wedding in 2011 so that guests could take home a slice of the cake.

Nigel Kirk, director of Mellors and Kirk Auctioneers in Nottingham, said it would interesting to see where the bids would come from.

He said: "Our royal family is greatly loved in many countries so it will be interesting to see where the bids come from.

"The cake itself is wrapped in greaseproof paper in the tin. It still smells quite wholesome but I wouldn't recommend that the buyer eats it - we wouldn't want them to get food poisoning.

"It will no doubt be popular with collectors of royal memorabilia."
