Judges were left confused about contestant James Byron's voice
8 February 2014

Would-be singing star James Byron leaves the coaches on The Voice spinning with his performance because they cannot tell if he is a man or a woman.

The 24-year-old from Leicestershire who sang Cry Baby, a track made famous by Janis Joplin, said performing was "the most empowering feeling" for him.

He said: "I was bullied when I was growing up because of the way I look. I've always been quite feminine s o I get a lot of people who confuse me with a woman."

And the judges were no different - with Kylie Minogue telling him: "W e were all perplexed actually. I didn't know if it was a man's voice, a woman's voice."

Another singer, S tephen Alexander from Scotland, followed in family footsteps with his performance after his aunt appeared on the hit BBC show last year.

He said: "They had the most amazing time, constantly on the phone screaming down 'Oh my God, you'll never believe what's happened. We're out for lunch with Tom Jones' and they absolutely loved it and said it was the best time of their life."
