An elderly woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a tree fell onto a car.

The woman, who is thought to be in her 70s, was travelling in a white Fiesta in Yardley, Birmingham, when the tree came down on top of the vehicle in Stoney Lane.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2pm today with fire crews having to cut the tree away.

The woman, who was a passenger in the car, suffered a chest injury and a broken leg during the incident and was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

Another female passenger from the same car was also taken to a different hospital with neck pain. The driver was uninjured.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "A woman passenger in her 70s was trapped in the car with the tree lying on top of it. The tree was cut away and removed by the fire service.

"The woman had a chest injury, a broken right leg and was experiencing spinal tenderness. She was given pain relief and oxygen and was immobilised before being taken by land ambulance accompanied by the air ambulance doctor to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

"Another woman passenger from the same car had neck pain and was taken to Heartlands Hospital. The driver was uninjured.

"A branch from the same falling tree also hit another nearby car. There were three people in the vehicle, all of whom were checked over and discharged at the scene."
