Boruc ruled out for six weeks

Artur Boruc is set for a spell on the sidelines

Southampton goalkeeper Artur Boruc has been ruled out for six weeks with a fractured hand sustained in Sunday's defeat at Chelsea, Press Association Sport understands.

The Poland goalkeeper was forced to leave the field after suffering the injury when attempting to keep out a Demba Ba effort at Stamford Bridge.

Ba's effort hit the post but the ball ricocheted nicely for Gary Cahill to force the ball over the line to make it 1-1 after 55 minutes and Chelsea went on to win the game 3-1.

Boruc, who had looked solid after his gaffe at Arsenal last weekend, was replaced by Paulo Gazzaniga but the Argentinian failed to impress and looked decidedly slow in getting down to Ba's late third for Jose Mourinho's men.

But with veteran Kelvin Davis also currently sidelined, Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino will have little option but to continue with Gazzaniga for the foreseeable future.

Boruc's injury is a significant blow for Southampton with the former Celtic man emerging as a key performer in Pochettino's side.

Saints rose as high as third in the Barclays Premier League but back-to-back defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea has seen them slip to seventh.
