Button Hungary for more success

Jenson Button concedes he is unlikely to win a grand prix this season
25 July 2013

Jenson Button heads to Budapest this weekend with happy memories - even if he knows he has little chance of adding to them.

Two of Button's greatest highs in Formula One came courtesy of the Hungarian Grand Prix, initially breaking his winless duck in 2006 whilst with Honda. The 33-year-old triumphed from 14th on the grid that day, a race record as no-one has taken the chequered flag at the Hungaroring from a lower position.

Two years ago Button put the icing on the cake of his 200th grand prix with another success, this time with McLaren, guaranteeing the event will long remain a special one in his eyes.

"Great circuit, great place. I have so many positive memories of racing at the Hungaroring," Button said ahead of Sunday's race. "Obviously, I won my first grand prix there back in 2006, which was incredibly emotional - and also feels such a long time ago now.

"I also won my 200th race there back in 2011. That was one of those days when everything went right, with the car a dream to drive and I just brought it home. Every victory in Formula One is special, but that's right up there as one of my favourite days in the car."

This season, however, is a very different story as Button knows he goes into the race with precious little hope of winning for a third time.

The lack of pace with this year's McLaren has yet to be overcome, and is unlikely to be, given the team are rapidly prioritising resources into next year's model given the changes to the engine regulations.

But in Button's eyes at least the last race in Germany, where he was sixth and team-mate Sergio Perez eighth, proved to the Briton the team's working practices cannot be faulted.

"A win in 2013 is going to be difficult, but I actually think the team is working very well right now," added Button. "In Germany, our tyre-usage, strategy and management of the race was as good as it's ever been.

"It would be good to have a car with a little more pace to enable those calls to have a bit more impact at the front of the pack. But, for the moment, we can be satisfied by doing the best possible job in qualifying and on Sunday afternoon."
