Double gold and silver for GB rowers

Great Britain celebrated two more Olympic gold medals and a silver at Eton Dorney on an historic - and dramatic - Super Saturday for British rowing.

Andrew Triggs Hodge, Pete Reed, Tom James and Alex Gregory beat arch-rivals Australia in sensational fashion to win Britain's fourth consecutive Olympic title in the coxless fours.

In the very next race, Sophie Hosking and Katherine Copeland produced a stunning performance to win gold in the lightweight women's double scull.

Britain extended their dynasty in the men's four in stunning fashion, leading Australia from the start before powering to victory in six minutes, 03.97 seconds.

Hodge, James and Reed are all now double Olympic champions, having been part of the victorious crew in Beijing. Olympic debutant Gregory adds an Olympic gold medal to the world championship title he won as part of a different men's four crew last year.

No-one could live with Copeland and Hosking during the Games as they accelerated clear of the field to win an historic gold medal for Britain.

Then the drama moved up a gear. Zac Purchase and Mark Hunter, the lightweight men's double scull champions in 2008, were less than a hundred yards into the race when a seat broke.

The rest of the boats stopped and after Purchase used a screwdriver to mend the seat, the race re-started.

It looked like the duo were remarkably going to hang on for gold only to be pipped in the final few yards by Denmark.

Britain's haul of four gold medals, two silvers and three bronze confirms London 2012 as their most successful Olympic regatta ever, surpassing the eight medals, including four golds, won at London in 1908.
