England chasing 94 for victory
England needed a modest fourth-innings score of 94 to draw their Test series against Sri Lanka and preserve their world number one status.
Graeme Swann closed with figures of six for 106 - with 10 wickets in the match - as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 278 on the final morning of the second Test in Colombo.
A last-wicket stand of 28 between Suranga Lakmal and Angelo Mathews, who was twice dropped early and went on to make 46, added to England's target, but Steven Finn struck just before lunch to keep it under three figures.
Swann took two wickets in the penultimate over on Friday night to hand England some vital momentum and he almost claimed another with the fourth ball of the morning. He turned one in sharply to Mathews from outside stump and the batsman could only fend to Alastair Cook at short-leg. It was a sharp, low chance but Cook will be disappointed not to have held on.
Cook handed Mathews a second life on 12 when he put down another bat-pad catch in the same position.
James Anderson thought he had secured the prize scalp of Mahela Jayawardene when Asad Rauf raised the finger following a sustained lbw appeal. But the Sri Lanka captain called for a review and third umpire Rod Tucker found enough evidence of an inside edge to over-rule Rauf.
Swann finally got his reward at the third time of asking, Jayawardene gloving a near undroppable chance to the grateful Cook to go for 64. England were suitably delighted to see the back of a man whose series tally comes to 354 at an average of 88.5.
His namesake Prasanna Jayawardene detained England for just six balls before being bowled around his legs on the sweep against Swann. That was Swann's 10th success of the match - the second time he has achieved the feat following his return of 10 for 217 against Bangladesh in March 2010.
Mathews looked ready to attack, thrashing Tim Bresnan for four over mid-on, but lost another partner when Rangana Herath nicked Samit Patel to Anderson at slip.
Finn then had Mathews well caught by Andrew Strauss with his fifth ball of the day.
