Federer seals London berth

Roger Federer made sure of his qualification for the ATP World Tour finals with a straight-sets victory over Kevin Anderson at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.

Federer came through 6-4 6-4 to book his place in the third round where he will face Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber, who had earlier beaten 11th seed Tommy Haas to progress.

With his qualification for the eight-man tournament at London's O2 Arena assured, the Swiss will now bid to win the event for a record seventh time.

World number one Rafael Nadal also made sure of his safe passage to the third round in Paris after he came through 7-5 7-5 in a match time of one hour 42 minutes.

It means the Spaniard, who is the top seed in the tournament, will play Jerzy Janowicz on Thursday.

"I am happy about the victory today," Nadal told atpworldtour.com.

"(It was my) first match indoors against not an easy opponent. So it is a good victory, a positive one for me. The victories on days when you are not playing well have much more value than the victories on days that you played well.

"I have to improve a lot for tomorrow. I hope to be ready to do it. Tomorrow will be a tough match.

"I had a very tough one against him in Montreal this year. I'm going to try to play aggressively, play with more intensity than what I did today."

Spain's third seed David Ferrer also progressed but he was taken to three sets by Lukas Rosol, eventually winning 6-0 2-6 6-3.

Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro, seeded fourth, saw off the challenge of Marin Cilic 6-4 7-6 (7/3) and lined up a third-round match with Grigor Dimitrov, who came though his encounter with 16th seed Fabio Fognini.

Sixth seed Tomas Berdych beat Pablo Andujar 6-2 7-5 to book his place in the third round while Gilles Simon fought off Nicolas Mahut in a shade under three hours to triumph 6-4 6-7 (5/7) 7-6 (7/3).

Elsewhere, Nicolas Almagro defeated Ivan Dodig, seventh seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat Feliciano Lopez and American John Isner came through against Polish qualifier Michal Przysiezny.

In the last match to finish, the big-serving Milos Raonic defeated qualifier Robin Haase 6-3 6-4.
