Gemili wins gold

Adam Gemili claimed 100 metres gold at the European Under-23 Championships in Tampere, Finland.

Gemili clocked 10.20 seconds to finish ahead of team-mate Deji Tobais, who took silver in 10.29secs.

Gemili's time, though, was outside the 'A' qualifying standard for the senior World Championships in Moscow next month - 10.15s - leaving him relying on the discretion of the selectors to get a 100m place for the Russian showpiece.

The 19-year-old, who has achieved the 200m 'A' standard, said: "It's great to win gold, that's what I came here to do. This is the main championships of the year for me, so to come here and win gold is a brilliant feeling.

"The time is a little disappointing because I didn't execute my race as well as I could, but I'm happy with a gold medal.

"My start was what let me down today, I was behind at the start and I had to just stay calm and execute the rest of my race. I did that and luckily came through.

"With how I've been training I think I should have a quicker time in me this season, but it's not to be today."

Jodie Williams won silver in the women's 100m, a year after she left the track at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium in tears, injury having wrecked her dreams of making the London Olympics.

Williams clocked 11.42 to finish behind winner Dafne Schippers of Holland (11.13).

"I'm really pleased considering the year I had last year," she said. "It was this exact weekend that I ended up in a heap at the end of the track and didn't even finish the race. So to come back here and get a medal is great."
