IOC contributes to doping fight
The International Olympic Committee announced on Saturday it has provided 20 million US dollars (£12,280,000) to fund the fight against doping and match-fixing.
New president Thomas Bach revealed the figures following a four-day "brainstorming session" with the IOC executive board in Montreux, Switzerland.
Bach has moved quickly since he was elected in September to succeed Jacques Rogge and he revealed 10 million US dollars (£6,140,000) would be available to fund new research into anti-doping, with an emphasis on new techniques to detect prohibited substances and methods.
The IOC also "invited" governments represented in the World Anti-Doping Agency to match that amount.
The other 10 million US dollars was an increase in support "to protect clean athletes from any manipulation or related corruption" in reference to match-fixing and illegal betting.
The IOC will sign a memorandum of understanding early next year with the international police agency Interpol and set up a special monitoring programme - the "Integrity Betting Intelligence System" - to check for any irregularities at the Games.
