Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis hit nine 180s en route to a 4-1 victory over Vincent van der Voort in the second round of the PDC World Championships at Alexandra Palace.

The world number three produced darts of the highest quality to book a third-round clash with either Devon Petersen or Justin Pipe.

He took the first set with a 146 checkout and raced through the second set, moving two clear with a 12-dart finish.

Lewis had played sublime darts in the first two sets but Van der Voort hit back with some fine play of his own to take the third following up a 177 with a 24 to reduce the arrears.

Lewis, though, restored his two-set advantage with a 112 finish to move 3-1 up and in sight of victory.

The world number three eased to a 2-0 lead and although there was the slightest of wobbles, double five saw him to victory.

Lewis praised his opponent and told Sky Sports 2: "I thought it was fantastic tonight.

"I hit the right shots at the right time, kept him under pressure.

"I've won it twice before so it's been there and done that."

Three-time semi-finalist James Wade came from 3-0 down to beat Andy Smith 4-3.

When Smith shot a double 12 for a 3-0 lead, Wade appeared to be on the verge of going out.

However, the sixth seed hit back, sealing the fourth set with a 68 finish before clawing back to 3-2 after following a 180 with a double top at the first attempt.

Smith moved to 2-2 in the sixth set, just a leg away from victory but another double top by Wade saw him level at 3-3 and force a final set.

Smith went 2-1 up but Wade hit double top and then landed checkouts of 122 and 100 to win the decider 4-2.

Wade said: "At 3-0 down I just told to try and make a game of it, and somehow I've managed to come back and win it.

"I know that I've got away with it again, with Andy missing those chances to win it, but they have to be taken, and I have a good habit of taking mine."

Mervyn King beat Ricky Evans 4-2 in a far more straightforward match.

The match was finely balanced at two apiece before King moved 3-2 ahead, winning the fifth set comfortably, and then overturned a 2-1 deficit in the sixth set to progress to the last 16.
