Long departs Wigan

Sean Long has left Wigan with immediate effect
19 July 2013

Former Great Britain scrum-half Sean Long has left Wigan, less than three months after his appointment as an assistant coach.

The 36-year-old former St Helens favourite quit his job as assistant coach at Salford on April 19 and four days later joined his home-town club Wigan, working alongside head coach Shaun Wane and assistants Iestyn Harris and Paul Deacon.

In a statement, Wigan say that, although Friday's agreement was mutual, Long experienced difficulties integrating into the "culture" of their club and would leave with immediate effect.

The statement said: "Whilst it remains clear to the Wigan staff that Sean is a highly skilled and competent coach, he has found it difficult as a new staff member to integrate into the disciplined and already high-performing culture at the Wigan club.

"This has been particularly challenging for him at such a crucial time, part way through the season.

"The parting was mutual and Wigan wish Sean well in his next role."
