SFL cancel reconstruction vote

A vote over reconstruction has been cancelled by the Scottish Football League
16 April 2013

The Scottish Football League has cancelled their reconstruction vote after the plans were defeated in a Scottish Premier League meeting - but the lower-league body called for the momentum for change to continue.

Ross County and St Mirren vetoed plans that would have seen both league bodies merge and given second-tier clubs a much greater share of central revenue.

There appeared to be strong support for the package in the First Division, although some lower-league clubs had expressed concern over plans to introduce the major restructure in time for next season.

The SPL decision has left their planned vote redundant but the SFL board will meet to consider how to secure some of the reforms that were on the table.

A statement from the league read: "Following the decision taken today by member clubs of the Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Football League special general meeting scheduled for Friday of this week will no longer be required.

"The Scottish Football League have supported the core principles of the proposed league reconstruction plan since the Henry McLeish report was published in December 2010.

"Henry's review of Scottish football was well received and reflected a broad view of input from the widest range of football stakeholders.

"We believe that positive change for the good of the game can still be achieved but this will require compromise and a more flexible approach to some key issues.

"If all parties agree to this approach and some realistic time frames can be agreed, then the current momentum for positive change need not be lost.

"The board of the Scottish Football League will meet on Thursday to review where we are and a further statement may be appropriate at that time."
