South Africa all out for 244

South Africa added just 31 runs in the first session on Friday as they were reduced to 244 all out by India on day three of the first Test in Johannesburg.

Ishant Sharma and Zaheer Khan finished with four wickets apiece to give the tourists a 36-run lead going into the second innings with both sides unconvincing with the bat.

Vernon Philander's removal for 59 effectively ended South Africa's batting hopes with Sharma and Khan ending with figures of four for 79 and 88 respectively.

South Africa had started the day on 213 for six, still trailing India by 67 runs after a batting collapse on Thursday.

Ishant Sharma had led the charge as India gained the upper hand as the Proteas went from 130 for one to lose three wickets without further score as they staggered to 146 for six.

Philander and Faf du Plessis then provided some drastically-needed stability with an unbeaten stand of 67, the pair not out on 48 and 17 respectively.

The former eached his half-century from the very first delivery of the day, hitting Sharma through the covers for four, taking him for 10 off the over.

However, Philander lasted just three overs when India made the breakthrough, the batsman edging Khan's delivery to Rohit Ashwin at first slip.

Philander had made 59 off 86 balls and including seven boundaries.

Dale Steyn came to the crease and he was soon off the mark, hitting Khan for two successive boundaries.

However, he had made just 10 when he fell victim to Ishant, trying to fend a short delivery only for it to loop towards Rohit Sharma at slip.

Steyn's dismissal left South Africa on 237 for eight, still 43 runs adrift with only two wickets.

Just two more runs had been added when Du Plessis was removed for 20, an outside edge off Khan going to MS Dhoni.

It was merely delaying the inevitable and when Khan claimed his fourth wicket - his yorker taking out Morne Morkel's off-stump for seven - it was all over for the hosts.
