Up and down Westwood shares lead

Lee Westwood birdied three of the first four holes at Wentworth today
26 May 2013

Lee Westwood managed just three pars on the front nine of his final round in the BMW PGA Championship, but still found himself in a share of the lead at Wentworth.

Westwood, seeking to win the European Tour's flagship event for the first time at his 20th attempt, began the day one shot behind playing partner Alejandro Canizares but was quickly two ahead after birdies at the second, third and fourth.

The 40-year-old had enjoyed a two-shot swing in his favour with a birdie on the fourth to a bogey six from Canizares, but the situation was reversed on the sixth where Westwood failed to save par from over the green and Canizares holed from short range for birdie.

Both players then bogeyed the seventh as well - Westwood's Achilles heel resurfacing with an awful three-putt - but the world number 12 hit straight back with a birdie from 15ft on the eighth.

A rare par on the ninth left Westwood 10 under par at the turn, level with Italy's Matteo Manassero who had birdied the third and fourth, dropped a shot at the sixth and then picked up further shots at the eighth and ninth, where he holed out from a greenside bunker.

Open champion Ernie Els, responsible for a controversial redesign of the course in 2010, had set the clubhouse target on eight under after a 67 which featured five birdies in the last seven holes.
