Lizzy Yarnold described her Sochi experience as 'incredible'
22 February 2014

Gold medallist Lizzy Yarnold will carry the flag for Great Britain at Sunday's closing ceremony for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The 25-year-old dominated the women's skeleton event, setting two track records on her way to victory on day seven of the Games.

Yarnold is the fourth consecutive Team GB athlete to medal in the event, following Alex Coomber (2002), Shelley Rudman (2006) and Amy Williams (2010), with her selection as the flagbearer made by chef de mission Mike Hay and deputy chefs de mission Mahdi Choudhury and Louise Whitehead.

"It's been an indescribable experience here in Sochi," Yarnold said.

"I came to these Games with the goal of competing to the best of my ability, doing my country proud, and supporting my team-mates across all of Team GB.

"To have been selected for this honour is so far beyond anything I could have ever imagined.

"It makes what has already been an incredible experience just that much more special, and I am extremely grateful."

Hay added: "In winning her Olympic gold medal, Lizzy delivered an outstanding performance, and I'm certain every member of our Team GB delegation congratulates her on this well-deserved honour.

"We came into these Olympic Winter Games as One Team GB, united in our support for one another, and I know our delegation will be proud to have Lizzy lead us into the closing ceremony."
