We may scrunch our noses at the mere suggestion of a Brussels sprout, but it seems the humble veg is much more palatable than we thought – when in crisp form, at least.

Following an avalanche of tweets and social media posts - and even podcasts debating the finer points of festive crisps - Walkers have decided to relaunch its limited edition Christmas flavours.

This includes the highly controversial Brussels sprout flavour alongside the more seasonally pleasing Glazed Ham and of course, the universally cherished Pigs in Blankets packets.

The flavours are available in single-serving 25g packs, but there will also be 75g sharing packs of Pigs in Blankets and Turkey & Stuffing on sale too, expected to retail for £1 each.

But be in no doubt that all eyes will be on Brussels sprouts; for some, the most unloved component of a classic Christmas dinner. Never has a flavour divided public opinion quite so much since Marmite was founded at the turn of the last century.

With this in mind, Walkers has curated two multipacks (£1.65 each) containing six 25g packs – ‘Sprout Lovers’ and ‘Sprout Haters’.

The Lovers pack will include the Brussels sprout packets alongside Pigs in Blankets and Turkey & Stuffing. Meanwhile the Haters will get to enjoy all the flavours of Christmas dinner - sans sprouts, naturally - with Glazed Ham, Cheese & Cranberry and Turkey & Stuffing instead.

Wayne Newton, a spokesman from Walkers said: “It’s official, our festive flavours are back! We’ve seen huge demand from crisp lovers on social media so we’re expecting British taste-buds to once again delight in the mix of flavours on offer.

Whether you’re a Sprout Lover or a Sprout Hater, or just love a bit of Christmas novelty, these playful flavours will certainly help you to get into the festive spirit.”

Available from October 7 at all major supermarkets, they’re among the first festive snacks to get the nation’s taste buds jingling as we count down towards Christmas.

As well as bringing an air of yuletide joy to lunchtime sarnies, they’re also perfect for Secret Santa gifts and make easy stocking fillers – after all who wouldn’t be utterly delighted to find a packet of crisps in their Christmas day gift pile?
