Though flip-flops are one of the most divisive footwear categories, no one can argue with their practicality.

Engineered with hot weather in mind, they’re designed to slip on and off, making them essential when the mercury’s on the rise and the idea of covered feet fills you with temperature-related anxiety.

While they won’t work for every occasion – wearing them to the office or for a city break will result in blisters and sores – they’re a suitcase staple for summer holidays. It’s a silhouette for casual settings only, namely sunbathing on a sandy beach or poolside, where they’ll protect your feet against hot terrains with as little shoe-related admin as possible. Just make sure you swap them with leather sandals, loafers or trainers when it’s time for the evening soirée or al fresco dinner.

Although they’re not usually known for street cred, this year, there’s a whole host of brands challenging the ‘uncool’ status. From Russell & Bromley’s timeless monochrome leather design to Camper’s cushioned take, not to mention the 90s celeb-approved classic by Havaianas, you no longer need to sacrifice fashion for functionality. Just make sure to stick to leather or rubber and steer clear of anything that looks too utilitarian or else risk erring into dadcore territory.

Our top tip? Don’t wear them if you’re likely to be walking long distances or dealing with difficult terrain. Not only will they leave you in desperate need of Compeed plasters, but they also tend to be a little flimsy, so there’s no support and it’s likely you’ll ruin them in the process.
