Hot Foot It

A friend recently asked me whether I thought it was okay for him to wear a pair of espadrilles in the office.

Under usual circumstances I’d have answered his question the same way had he asked me if he could wear flip-flops out of the house: ‘NO WAY YOU MANIAC.’ But this season a host of cool brands has released high-quality leather and suede takes on classic espadrilles, which will work as well on the beach as they will, if not in the office, then at least in the pub.

In Brief

Burberry has pushed the envelope when it comes to the classic fashion-show format (as the first major brand to sell its seasonal collections straight off the runway). Now it’s experimenting with the leathers it uses to make its bags. For its new DK88 bag collection, Christopher Bailey was inspired by the label’s classic gabardine trench cloth. Patented by Thomas Burberry in 1888, the fabric’s ridged texture has been applied to the bag leather with elegant effect. My choice is this top-handled, doctor’s bag-style briefcase in a rich green.

Match Point

It’s hardly surprising that fashion brands have a bit of a thing for tennis.

This season top labels have got behind the summer’s biggest tournaments — from Parisian shoemaker JM Weston, which has produced some bright-hued loafers in celebration of the French Open, to Ralph Lauren, which is celebrating 12 years as the official outfitter of Wimbledon with a more comprehensive collection than ever. Here’s my pick.
